"Can You List The Band's Discography?"

7SECONDS

there hasn't been a 7Seconds show since March 24, my birthday. that somewhat sickens me. i mean, i realize we did a whole lot of touring this past year but 4 months of no shows with my favorite band in the whole wide world is just too much. in those 4 months, Steve and Troy have been living in Reno, chillin' with the wives and kids and occasionally working a real job, here and there. i've been pretty busy. in that time i've:

  • suffered through my intense allergies.
  • gotten terribly out of shape.
  • written TONS of new songs for both 7Secs and other projects.
  • had a couple of semi-serious bouts of depression.
  • recorded an entire album of material completely on my own. yes, that's right, in my quest for TOTAL artistic control, i played EVERY instrument on these songs and sang everything (except, of course, the harmonies which my bitchen girlfriend Allyson sang).
  • recorded even MORE stuff at home on my 4-track.
  • went both rafting and sailing a couple of times (before that, i had done neither).
  • taken down my computer BBS (bulletin board system), Poprockit.
  • started up a cassette-only label, Poprockit.
  • lost more pieces of my teeth.
  • become "host" of yet another 'open mic' at a local cafe.
  • grown seriously dependent on Otter Pops.
  • cut down on my caffeine intake.
  • done little travelling.
  • written 2 books of poetry and artwork i haven't published yet.
  • ...and that's about it.

there is a little speculation that the band is on it's last leg, that after getting dissed by Immortal/Epic, our (now FORMER) record label, we've decided to "throw in the towel". now anyone who knows this band knows how ridiculous that idea is. in 16 years, we've been through the ringer with record labels. do you honestly think that something like this, which, by the way, really isn't as bad as it sounds, could make us stop? give me a break! yeah, we did indeed expect Immortal to push us more. our album,'The Music, The Music' got little publicity, and except for a brief run in the CMJ top 20 (of 200 albums), little mainstream attention (yeah, whoopee! like we've EVER gotten that much radio play or press anyway!). what's new? we didn't sell a half-million or even 50,000 "units", so Epic decides to look the other way and Immortal just kinda gives up. it's happened before and by people who we've actually had friendships with. how could something like being dissed my a major label makes us want to quit? it can't. we're in a very good position at this point. there is indie label interest and we STILL enjoy successful tours. if we were a new, less experienced band something like this COULD hurt and maybe even kill us as a band. but we're like old, sturdy dogs. we just keep going and doing what we love to do. if we ever break up, it'll be because: A) we start hating each other or B)we stop loving and believing in (deal with it cynical fuckers!) our music. that's it.

    5'10"/solo/Go National

as you may or may not have heard, longtime friend and drummer (Drop Acid/ 5'10") Brent and i had what i suppose you could call "a parting of ways" in early April. at that time he not only played drums and helped organize things w/5'10", he was also Al and i's housemate and 7Seconds' manager. for a number of reasons, he quit as 7Secs' manager and 5'10"'s drummer, moved out of the house and basically disappeared for a few months. i could under- stand why he would quit managing 7Secs. it's a tough and thankless job at times and a shitty way to make a living. but i had a hard time understanding why he, Allyson and i couldn't remain friends. it was a very sad period because we never actually got to talk about our problems and differences. recently, Al e-mailed him about a phonebill and we hooked up and talked about alot of stuff. he explained his take on the whole thing and i tried doing the same. a couple of weeks ago, Brent, Al and i started playing together again and it's been fun. we even did a show here in Sacramento (opening for ex-Breeders Kelley Deal's new band) that went well despite the fact that we didn't have a bass player. we have a couple of shows coming up this month (August) that i'm SO looking forward to. Brent may be moving out of Sacto but if he stays, it looks like we might be playing together again which i would like, alot. it even looks like we found a super cool bass player. his name is Gabe and he's an old friend of Al and i.

the big question is, what name will i use for this "new" band. i kinda feel like 5'10" has served it's purpose, that it's time for a new name. we ARE playing several 5'10" songs but there is alot of new material and the "vibe" is a bit different now. there WILL be an e.p. coming out shortly. this will include the stuff i recorded alone. i've thought about just calling it 'Kevin Seconds' because it's the only TRUE solo recording i've done but i feel a little weird and self-conscious using my name as the name of the band. one name i've been kicking around lately is:

    go national

i don't know why but i like the sound and look of it. try it out, go on, say it RIGHT NOW, go national, come on, say it. ok? ok. now get a pen and a piece of paper and write it down. take a good, long look at it. what do you think? i like it.

anyway, i can't tell you what label this new e.p. is going to come out on. i have an idea but it's too premature to mention just yet. i can tell you that it WILL NOT be coming out on Immortal/Epic. nope.
